I went into my local garden centre recently to find that the whole place have been completely re-vamped and a massive area dedicated to barbecues and smokers. What did this tell me?……..Two things:-

1.Barbecue grills and meat smokers continue to become more popular recreational equipment.2.There’s money to be made!

Let’s face it; the smartest “in your face” displays have got to be for the products that carry the biggest margins, right? Having spoken to the manager I think maybe it’s the barbecue grill accessories where a killing can be made but whatever the case, you can quite easily spend a serious amount of cash on a new barbecue grill and that will be completely wasted money if you buy the wrong thing.

Consider the situation twenty odd years ago before modern manufacturing techniques, globalisation and low cost country sourcing, the situation was even worse for someone with no income and lots of leisure time (you guessed it, I was a student!). CD’s had just appeared on the music shelves (a big drain on cash compared to vinyl), I don’t think the word download was in our vocabulary and certainly the thought of getting easy barbecue recipes off the internet could be nothing more than a dream.

I was doing what students do best – having one long party! But the opportunity to have a barbecue party was nil because we simply couldn’t afford to buy a barbecue, and to a confirmed outdoor cooking enthusiast. It was at this point that I decided to build my brick BBQ grill out of 16 second hand bricks and two cake cooling trays.

Not only is this a great low cost introduction to building a homemade barbecue grill it’s also a wonderfully portable system too. Simply lay 8 bricks on the ground in two rows of four to make a square. On two sides place 2 bricks (on their sides) and place another 2 bricks on top so that in cross section you’ve now got a U shape. Throw the charcoal on the brick base a span two cake cooling grids across the top and there you have it.

The cake cooling trays are really cheap in the supermarket and (as a true student has to) the bricks were acquired one night from a local housing development. So with the barbecue complete, how did I get hold of some good easy BBQ recipes?

Well that’s where it all started to fall apart and a process of enthusiastic trial and error began. Now matter how much experience you have cooking on a barbecue, flare-ups happen. The best way to deal with this is to keep a spray bottle near by with some water in it. If you do get a flare up, spray the affected area with a fine mist of water.

After a cold winter indoors there is little that can compare to the warm sun and the delightful aromas wafting from the neighborhoods barbecue grills and the soft clatter of barbecue grill accessories as steaks are turned, hamburgers flipped and hot dogs rolled.

A barbecue is an excuse to delight in lovely weather, allow the children to run and play and the adults to relax and chat. The ideal backyard barbecue is not usually a private affair though families love these relaxing meals out. Instead it is a social event unlike any other and usually occurs because the sun is shining, no other reason is necessary.

An outdoor barbecue allows the inner gourmet to emerge in even the most conservative, and tending the barbecue grills is an art form not a chore. However there are some keys to a successful barbecue which will ease the work involved in hosting this fun filled event and will have everyone leaving with a smile.

Ensure that the garden area is child proofed and there is plenty of room to play. It may be a good idea to put up separate tables for the children. The tables should be placed in shaded areas. Adults will likely be spending more time in the seating area, since a good barbecue is about relaxing so ensure the seating area is shaded and comfortable. Citronella candles are excellent accessories in areas where mosquitoes are a warm weather problem.

The barbecue grill should be clean and one of the most essential barbecue grill accessories is the wire brush to clean the grill with prior to starting. The garden area surrounding the grill free of debris, since tripping over the garden hose while holding a platter full of steaks could spoil the mood. Ensure that if there are children at the barbecue (and there usually are) that foods such as hamburgers and hotdogs are served as well.

Tongs, spatulas and meat forks are just some of the barbecue grill accessories the outdoor chef may find not only useful but also essential when preparing the feast. While most barbecue grills will come with a cover to protect the food as it cooks and to keep the heat in, it is usually good to have a covered plate or serving platter on which to place the cooked meat. This is particularly true if like at most barbecues there are mounds of food and a large variety of meats. Some will cook more quickly than others will and a cover will help keep the food warm.

There is no one menu for every garden barbecue as favorites vary with the region but everyone loves a good barbecue and there is no more relaxed social event. The best recipe for a great garden barbecue is, a warm day, a few friends, some good meat, and a few essential barbecue grill accessories.
