The British And Barbecue Sauce

One of my best mates is English, he lives in Manchester. I met him a few years back when I was romantically involved with his next door neighbor, a wonderful girl, who dumped me flat. He too, had latterly become single unexpectedly, and we spent one or two days together, in the local pub, feeling sorry for ourselves, eating and drinking. Pub food is not that great, but it must have helped, maybe because it replaced heartbreak, with angina. We were having an evening meal of bangers and mash, a particularly heavy mixture of sausage and creamed potatoes, when I remarked that a little barbecue sauce would do our supper a whole world of good. With the likely exception of some temperamental British cooks, with Yankee TV programs, the Brits just do not understand how to make good meals. Baked beans and eggs for breakfast, greasy deep-fried fish and potatoes, for lunch, the aforementioned bangers and mash for supper, and perhaps some spotted dick, which isn’t as bad as it sounds, but isn’t really good either, seem to be the highlights of the English menu. And, a real, hearty, savory barbecue sauce is nowhere to be found. Before I left, I told my pal, if he ever made it to the States, I’d show him a nice time and we would have some genuine barbecue. We kept in touch, by email, and last month he ultimately came for a visit. I called it Yank bangers, and my pal loved it. the evening before he flew home to Manchester, we had the grand conclusion dinner. I took him to a Syrian restaurant where they marinated a goat, in the Arabic version of barbecue sauce, and then cooked it in a pit. It was the least I could do, because, of course, I’d ruined English cuisine for him, for ever.
